Forecaster cuts 2007 hurricane outlook

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Sigh. Not good news for the extreme weather crowd - from Reuters -
“The 2007 hurricane season may be less severe than forecast due to cooler-than-expected water temperatures in the tropical Atlantic, private forecaster WSI Corp said on Tuesday.”

“Because the ocean temperatures have not yet rebounded from the significant drop in late spring, we have decided to reduce our forecast numbers slightly,” said Todd Crawford, a WSI seasonal forecaster.

Cooler than expected water temperatures?  Ocean temperatures that have not yet rebounded?  Yikes!

Fear of a global ‘coldening’

Friday, July 13th, 2007

Straight out of the Daily Telegraph in Australia - “LAST month Australians endured our coldest June since 1950. Imagine that; all those trillions of tonnes of evil carbon we’ve horked up into the atmosphere over six decades of rampant industrialisation, and we’re still getting the same icy weather we got during the Cold War.”

Global warming can mean colder, it can mean drier, it can mean wetter, that’s what we’re dealing with.  It’s called WEATHER !

Snow in Buenos Aires for the first time in 89 years

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

The BBC reports  that as temperatures plunged to -8 F. in parts of Argentina’s provence of Rio Negro that snow has fallen for the first time in 89 years.

”Bitterly cold weather in May caused some 20 deaths and forced the Argentine authorities to ration supplies as the country’s energy system came under strain”

“Argentine meteorologists are predicting more cold and even freezing weather over the next few days. ”

But hey, with the Live Earth carbon generating concerts going on, who’s going to even notice this!

Monday, June 18th, 2007

The Jackson Hole Star Tribune reports “Up to 8 inches of snow fell in the Big Horn Mountains in northern Wyoming and forced highway officials to close a section of U.S. 14A between Burgess Junction and Lovell.”

Tell the people of Jackson Hole that global warming is real. The 8 inches of snow is not. Go on, tell them…

Monday, June 18th, 2007

Freak snow storm hits Nepal

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

From IOL, “Dozens of people were feared killed in remote parts of north-western Nepal after the areas were hit by a freak snow storm, officials said on Tuesday.”

“We have reports that at least 16 people died and about a hundred others were blinded by a freak snow storm and blizzard,” Home Ministry spokesperson Baman Prasad Neupane told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

The rescue mission is expected to proceed slowly due to continuing bad weather in the area and lack of road access in the district.”

When it’s warm in the winter, we hear about it on all the mainstream media outlets, but when it’s cold in the summer… shhh.

Freezing temperatures in Argentina pushes electricity demand to record high

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

From Bloomberg ”The temperature in many parts of Argentina fell below freezing yesterday, pushing electricity demand to a record 18,300 megawatts, according to the country’s energy regulator.”

“About 100 schools in Buenos Aires province are closed today for lack of sufficient heating, newspaper Clarin reported. The national weather service predicted the below-freezing temperatures will continue tomorrow before rising later in the week. ”

The climate just seems to do its own thing.  Seems to be a rather “Inconvenient Truth” wouldn’t you think.

May snow falls in Germany, Austria, Italy and Corsica

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

The Daily Mail writes “In Spitzing in Germany, locals have been forced to wrap up after ten centimetres of snow brought out the snowploughs for the first time this year” in May.

“It was the same story in towns close to the Alps in Austria, Switzerland and even northern Italy where temperatures in May routinely climb into the 80s.”

“Ironically, the weather follows one of the worst winters ever for snow at Alpine ski resorts.”

Hmm.. So climate does change. Sometimes colder, sometimes warmer. Global warming seems to be very picky in the locations it chooses to impact.

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

The Calgary Sun reports “The wintry blast topped the previous snowfall mark of 5.1 cm for May 24, set in 1911, with communities on the city’s northwestern edge among the hardest hit.”

This planet has a fever! Sorry couldn’t resist. Not in Calgary.

“And such meteorological mayhem is hardly unheard of this time of year, said Dan Kulak of Environment Canada, who noted May weather in the Calgary region can change at a moment’s notice. “
