Low May temperatures in South Africa break 54 records

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

The CapeTimes.co.za reports that “THE icy weather of snow, hail and heavy rain that has swept across South Africa over the past few days has set 54 weather records.”

Be glad you weren’t a tourist visiting South Africa because - “A busload of travellers and 12 truckdrivers spent an icy night stranded on the Lootsberg pass in the Eastern Cape on Monday night when snow and ice made it impossible to negotiate the slippery road.”

Snow on the Eastern Cape in May. I’ll have to dig my Rossignol Bandit’s out of winter storage.

Snow kidding! Wintery conditions in Colorado days before Memorial Day.

RockMountainNews.com reports that “the southwestern mountains of Colorado were under under a snow advisory Wednesday (May 23, 2007!), with up to 8 inches of accumulation possible. A freeze watch was in effect Wednesday night in the San Luis Valley region and much of southeastern Colorado was under a flash-flood watch.”

So when we have wacky weather that is unseasonably cold in the warm months, do we here about it on the mainstream media outlets?  No, no.  Climate change is only one direction.

Last year short and sneakers. This year snowshoes and ice axes on Pikes Peak.

The Colorado Springs Gazette brings us this interesting story on Pikes Peak - “Last May, Teresa Taylor was watching climbers pad up to the summit of Pikes Peak in shorts and sneakers. This year, she’s warning everyone that beyond Barr Camp, you’d better be dressed for the worst.”

Last year, 2006, Pikes Peak only saw 50 inches of snow. This year the winter brought 231 inches or a 350% increase.

“In the years the cadets have lived in Colorado Springs, tennis shoes and jeans would have been adequate for a May Pikes Peak climb, but this year it’s so snowy that skiers have been riding the train up and skiing down the east face this month.”
